MYRDINN  Since the upgrade to 3.1.2 on my iPod Touch 2nd generation, my Wi-Fi network died.

It sees the network, seems to connect to it, but anything else is a failure.

No MAIL, no APP STORE, no SAFARI surfing, no iDISK, no MOBILEME, no SYNC of any kind, nada. From now on, I'm living a nightmare.

MARCHINTOSH  Same here on iPhone first generation. Connection was OK before update to 3.1.2

I seem to have to put it in Airplane mode and then turn Airplane mode off in order to connect to WiFi. Went to Apple discussions and there are many others with the same problem.

Come on Apple. Knock, Knock. Anyone home? Listen to the masses and fix this issue once and for all.

    MYRDINN  Okay.

    It's getting worse.

I can connect to any Wi-Fi network, but mine, on my iMac.

Internet coffee works well... LOL Stores also.

I've tried everything, every resets available, on my iPod and on my iMac.

Disabling my firewall, create a new network, bla-bla-bla...

It sees my network, log (or seems to log) properly using the good password, then : nothing.

    I'm going crazy.

ISLANDMACMAN  I have two iPhones - the first upgraded without incident. The second was totally bricked - it took 3+ hours to finally get everything in order. Stuff happens, I guess.

More importantly, when is Apple going to fix email so that I don't have to click-click-click-click to switch from one account to another? Tabs would work well here - I getting tired of the current situation, my fingers hurt.

When is Apple going to allow Bluetooth syncing?

When is Apple going to allow video recording on all iPhone models - my 7 year old Samsung can do it. Most cheap phones today can do it. There is no excuse.

ILGAZ  What I don't understand is why don't they use "patching" as unlike OS X, iPhone/iPod (non jail broken) is not modified by user by any chance.

Game developers like Blizzard use patching for years without any issues. OK, on OS X , we change icons, modify plist files etc. but not on iPhone OS. This could be a 5-10 mb update instead.

JOELWNELSON  Never had a problem in the past with iPhone updates, but I got an error 14 with this update and had to do a factory restore (not even restoring data from backup as that failed to load with a "file not found" error). This is on an iPhone that has never been jailbroken, using a brand-new MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and permissions recently repaired. Probably a rare/isolated issue but something to take into consideration. Would suggest syncing first, before applying the update, so at least your backup is up-to-date.

    NAOH  Whew!

It fixes two bugs that I've been experiencing since 3.1.

(The connectivity problem and not waking up.)

I was getting worried that my handset had developed a hardware fault.

LEPPE  This is weird??? I've updated iTunes and all other updates but when I attach my iPod Touch the update is NOT 3.1 but 3.1.1?

    Anyone else with this?

Any news about a new update (already?)

    Regards.

HUSSAIN  The iPhone and iPod firmware numbers are not in sync. So 3.1.1 is correct for iPod touch and 3.1 is for iPhone.

THE MAC DOC  When I attempted to apply the 3.1 firmware update, it completely screwed my iPhone. And I do mean completely, as in 100%.

I literally had to attach it to another Mac and restore it to the original factory settings just to get it activated so I could have a phone! Everything was reset. I have to manually redo every single setting, re-add all my email accounts, my wireless network settings, EVERYTHING. Trying to restore from a previous backup FAILED.

Luckily my Contacts are backed up on MobileMe so I didn’t lose them, but it’s still a nightmare.

    ****.

STORMCHILD  A word of warning to 1st gen iPod Touch users who are planning to update (not that anyone will come here looking for info first, since you must update within iTunes anyway, but just for the hell of it…).

In iPhone OS 3.1.1 (the version you get if you're using an iPod Touch), Apple has removed the ability to double-click the home button to bring up the playback/volume controls at any time. It now works ONLY when a song in your iPod library is playing. At any other time, it takes you to one of three places -- the first home screen, the search screen, or the iPod app -- depending on the preference you set in Settings.

Because the 1st gen iPod Touch doesn't have a hardware volume control on the side, this means it now has NO VOLUME CONTROL when playing games or using music apps, unless the app provides its own slider for it (which in any case will be in some menu somewhere, and not always available).

This also means you cannot even unpause your music while browsing the web or doing something else. If you double-click the home button while something's playing, you get the pop-up controls, but if you pause the music and close the pop-up controls, you won't be able to get them back. Double-clicking the button when nothing is playing will take you to the place you chose in preferences.

If you want the old playback/volume pop-up…too bad. Apple decided you don't need it anymore, and apparently wants you to buy a new iPod Touch if you're still using the original one. Mine is only a year and a half old.

I've already complained about it on Apple's iPod Touch feedback page; if you're using a 1st gen iPod Touch, I suggest you do too:

ANON BUD  Yeah. I actually do read these comments before upgrading, especially given the past performance and major probs with crashes on iPod Touch. Being a 1st Gen user, I'll go to the forums--as always--to check out what others are saying before I upgrade.

    Thanks for the warning!

    SJK  .

    > At any other time, it takes you to one of three places -- the first home screen, the search screen, or the iPod app -- depending on the preference you set in Settings.

First time the double-tap returned to the Music (iPod) app, but since then it's displaying the iPod Controls. Settings:

    General > Home

Double-click the Home Button for: iPod

    iPod Controls ON

    iPod touch 1G, OS 3.1.1

The Home Button setting had reverted to Home after the upgrade so I had to change it back to iPod.

GAZMAN  Anyone know of a way to download this without needing to have your iPhone connected? For big downloads like this (I live in rural Australia with sh*tty broadband) I would much rather download it at work but don't want to have my iPhone connected the whole time.
